Nicole by OPI Modern Family Holiday 2013 ♥ Swatches & Review

Nicole by OPI Modern Family Holday

Just in time for the holidays, Nicole by OPI has release five new polishes as part of the Modern Family line, available exclusively at CVS.  The first Modern Family collections was one of my favorites of 2013, so I had high hopes for this one!  Did it live up to my expectations?  Find out after the jump!

Aren’t Families Grape? is a royal purple with pink shimmer.  It applied very sheer (but evenly), reminding me of the old OPI formula, and built up well in 3 coats.  This turned out to be my favorite of the bunch!

You’re My Treasure (over Aren’t Families Grape?) is 3 sizes of gold glitter in a clear base – small glitter, medium hex glitter and a new large diamond shaped glitter that we haven’t really seen from a mainstream band before.  Initially I was terribly excited by the diamond shaped glitter, but when I wore it, it drove me slightly batty.  Know how you run your fingers over your nails when  you have a bumpy polish on?  I kept doing that with You’re My Treasure, and my fingers kept catching on the diamonds.  A few of the diamonds didn’t lay entirely flat and I ended up picking them off as the day went on.  So I applaude Nicole for trying something new, but for me it just didn’t work!

Nicole by OPI Who Red My JournalNicole by OPI Spark the Conversation over Who Red My Journal

Who Red My Journal??? is a bright red shimmer that leans slightly orange.  In the bottle I didn’t think I would like this color, but on the nail it was very festive!  Great formula which was perfect in two coats.

Spark the Conversation (over Who Red My Journal???) is a square holographic glitter in a clear base.  Again, I think it’s wonderful that Nicole went outside the box and used a glitter not common from mainstream brands, but this was a PITA!  The suspension base wasn’t thick enough to hold down the glitter, which sank down to the bottom of the bottle.  Even after I left the bottle inverted overnight, I had a very hard time getting the glitter on the nail – as you can see by the fact that my glitter placement was very erratic.  Some nails ended up with a  lot of glitter (when I “globbed” it on) and some were more sparse (where I tried to just “dab” it on).

Nicole by OPI Late Blu-mer

Late Blu-mer is a light blue frost.  Nicole describes the shade as vintage blue jeans.  On the nail it is less frosty than it appears in the bottle, but a frost is still a frost.  I did not enjoy this polish.

Just for fun (since it was my favorite!) here are a few more pictures of Aren’t Families Grape? in different lighting.  Even though it wasn’t sunny out when I took these pictures, you can really see the pink shimmer!

Overall, the collection was a dud for me.  The glitters were original, but failed (me) on execution.  The colors were not original, but had excellent formula.  If it were me, I would not drive around all of my local CVS stores looking for them, but if I found them on a whim  I might pick up a few!
